Taiwan's languages

 

The official language that used in Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese. They also use Mandarin Chinese in their education. Besides that, the Taiwanese also speak Min-nan yu or also known as Taiyu. A small group of Hakka people that live in Taiwan will speak Hakka instead of Taiyu. However, some of the elderly in Taiwan are able to speak Japanese as they were subjected to Japanese education during the occupation of Japanese before the year 1945. In Taiwan, they are now started to speak English even in their school curriculum as English is the international language.

Although all the indigenous people have their own indigenous languages but almost all of them know how to speak Mandarin Chinese. However, the indigenous people in Taiwan are enthusiastic to identify their heritage. But for the younger generations in Taiwan, most of them are grew up in the city areas so they never speak their indigenous language anymore.

Taiwan’s government is strongly encouraging the Taiwanese to study. There is a compulsory for the Taiwanese to study between the ages of 6 to 15 years old. Usually, the education system process includes two years of pre-school education, six years of primary school, three years of junior high school, three years of senior secondary school, and four to seven years of college or university.

High education in Taiwan includes the junior colleges, colleges, university and graduate programs. Students need to take relevant examinations to enter the college or university they want after finish their study in senior secondary school. The universities and colleges in Taiwan have different type of master’s and doctoral programs. The government in Taiwan set up more colleges and universities. Not only that, the government also allowed more private institutions to enter and set up in Taiwan. 

The language of instruction in Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese as their principal language and they maintain the norm of the education policy. Although there are many indigenous groups with different indigenous languages, the education system in Taiwan is standardized to use mandarin Chinese. However, some school also teaches other languages, for example, Hakka and Taiyu.
